Where to Find the Best Fish and Chips in Bath

28 September 2018

Bath may not be right beside the seaside, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a truly delicious portion of fish and chips. In fact, there are a good number of restaurants and fish and chip shops in Bath to choose from – but which is the best? Here’s our insider guide to where to find a top cod, beautiful batter and perfect chippy chips…

The Scallop Shell Bath

Highly recommended by none other than renowned celebrity chef Marco Pierre White, the Scallop Shell is one of Bath’s best fish and chip restaurants. It’s also a multi-award winner, regularly scooping up an impressive number of Bath Good Food Awards, National Fish & Chip Awards and Bath Life Awards to name but a few.

On the menu inside this bright, colourful and contemporary restaurant is lightly battered, melt-in-the-mouth cod and haddock. Chef Garry Rosser and his team also serve up seasonal specials (with fresh ingredients sourced from local coastal markets first thing in the morning) and of course, incredible freshly cut chips fried to perfection.

The Scallop Shell Bath is on Monmouth Place, near Queen Square.

Pollocks Fish and Chips

This popular family-run business serves traditional, tasty fish and chips with friendly, charming service, offering takeaway and the unusual but welcome option to enjoy your meal with a pint at the Belvoir Castle Pub next door. Pollocks even has a gluten-free menu, plus a tempting choice of daily specials. Find it in Victoria Buildings off Lower Bristol Road, just outside the centre of the city.

The Garricks Head

If it’s not a takeaway you’re after, why not enjoy a traditional sit-down meal at The Garricks Head? Serving up what some locals would describe as the very best fish and chips in Bath in a bustling, traditional pub dining room, the historic Garricks Head is also conveniently located right next door to the beautiful Georgian playhouse, the Theatre Royal. If you’re seeing a show, it’s the ideal stop-off beforehand. Head to St John’s Place to visit this popular eatery – it’s easy to find, adjoined as it is to the Theatre Royal.

Seafoods

Seafoods Fish and Chips Bath is one of the city’s oldest fish and chip restaurants, serving hungry locals since as far back as 1935. It’s still going strong after all these years and is a particular favourite with audiences flooding out of the nearby Theatre Royal. Seafoods serves up a selection of sustainably sourced fish, with a surprisingly varied selection from cod and haddock to mackerel and plaice. If you’re looking for a taste of the traditional, Seafoods is absolutely the place to go. You’ll find it just off Kingsmead Square, right in the heart of the city.
