The best Christmas carols and concerts in Bath this December

16 December 2020

Christmas in Bath may be a little different this year, especially with the cancellation of the Bath Christmas Market (although make sure you check out the fantastic virtual market). But that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy some of our favourite festive traditions in the city.

We’ve put together an at-a-glance guide to carol singing and Christmas concerts in Bath this December.

Snap up your tickets now, as some of these events are bound to be popular! And due to COVID-19, places are likely to be limited.

Carols by Candlelight

St Mary’s Church, Bathwick – 16th December 2020

Bath Assembly Rooms – 18th + 19th December 2020

The much-loved Bath Back Choir is back once again with three nights of beautiful carol singing by twinkling candlelight.

You can enjoy their first 75-minute performance at St Mary’s Church in Bathwick, close to no fewer than three of our elegant holiday properties – Sydney Mews, Darlington’s and our charming Vane Garden Flat.

This will be followed by two nights of uplifting festive carols at the magnificent Bath Assembly Rooms. If you’d like to stay nearby, check out our Alfred Street and Circus House apartments.

For many Bath residents, it just isn’t Christmas until they’ve heard the Bath Bach Choir sing. Don’t miss it.

The Snowman and the Bear

The Forum – 19th December

Now this is something really special. A double bill of classic Christmas films, The Snowman and The Bear, accompanied by the fantastic Bath Philharmonia. These cherished animated adaptations of Raymond Briggs novels will screen at The Forum for one day only, in a COVID-secure matinee performance at 2.30pm. You haven’t experienced these wonderful films until you’ve seen them with a live orchestra providing the soundtrack.

Home for Christmas

Bath Abbey – 15th– 17th December

There’s a full schedule of Christmas music and celebration planned at the Abbey, one of the most famous and popular landmarks in Bath. It’s a truly magical space for live music and singing, thanks to its huge vaulting ceiling and epic architecture.

One of the best festive events at Bath Abbey this December is Home for Christmas, described as “A 30-minute cosy and joyful Christmas service in the Abbey. Gathering around the Christmas tree there will be Christmas carols, readings, and Christmas reflections; bringing comfort and joy.”

Other highlights of the season are special performances by the Bath Abbey Girls’ Choir on 12th December, and a Christmas Concert by the Boys’ Choir and lay clerks on 19th December.

Stay at our stunning Queen’s View or Argyle Upon Avon apartments and you’ll only be a short walk away from the Abbey.

Handel’s Messiah

St Mary’s Church, Bathwick – 18th December

It’s back to the beautiful St Mary’s Church in Bathwick for another special Christmas concert, a performance of Messiah by George Frederic Handel. This iconic masterpiece will be performed by the Bristol Ensemble in a resplendent 90-minute piece, with soloists drawn from the Bristol Ensemble Consort. There are two performances available, at 4pm and 7.30pm on 18th December, with tickets costing £27.50.
