Bath to get brand new independent food market in Abbey Green

30 March 2017

If you love food, love the city of Bath and can’t resist a mooch around a good market – you’re in luck. A brand new independent market is coming to a gorgeous green corner of the city, promising locally produced food and goods in a fabulous setting.

The market will be nestled in Abbey Green, close to Bath Abbey and right in the heart of the city. As soon as it receives official permission from Bath & North East Somerset Council – who are reported to be all in favour of the idea – the independent Bath Market will be held on the third Sunday of each month. The first market is scheduled for May 21st if all goes ahead as planned.

It will have 20 to 25 stalls packed with everything from local produced food and drink to fresh flowers and plants. Shoppers can also browse ceramics, textiles, homewares and much more, all made by Bath producers wherever possible. Locals will be able to pick up market staples like fresh produce, cheese, bread preserves and pickles, and there’ll be plenty of treats on offer in the form of cakes and bakes.

It’s a celebration of Bath produce, and organisers want the market to have a distinctly continental theme. While on a small scale, the market has big ambitions – the Bath Chronicle reports that it is set to rival the famous Frome Independent Market.

Abbey Green is a great area for it, as it has a charming cobbled space, plenty of greenery and is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The idea is for visitors to shop at the market and browse the stalls, then make a real day of it by visiting some of Bath’s best local businesses. Announcing the news, organiser Silvana de Soissons from The Foodie Bugle Shop told the Bath Chronicle:

“It will be a wonderful market in a beautiful part of Bath.

“It is a unique opportunity for people to buy stunning local goods and enjoy a day out in our beautiful city.

“We will only sell artisan goods and goods made here in Somerset,”
