3 of the best French restaurants in Bath

27 July 2018

Some would argue that French cooking is among the very best in the world, but where can you find it in Bath? As the city has such a thriving food and drink scene, it’s no surprise there are many different options to choose from for fabulous French food in Bath. Here are just a handful of our favourites:

  • Chez Dominique

Ever since the well-reviewed Bistro La Barrique Bath closed earlier in 2018, lovers of French food have been flocking to Chez Dominique – when they can get in. This small French bistro is perfectly understated, with a fabulous menu of delicious modern French dishes.

As well as a mouth-watering à la carte menu, Chez Dominique has a great value ‘Prix Fixe’ menu, with two courses at just £15 and three courses only slightly more at £18. Popular dishes include the onglet steak with peppercorn sauce, the fillet of royal bream with samphire and beurre blanc. On the dessert menu, the board of classic French cheeses and biscuits is a real favourite.

Visit Chez Dominique on Argyle Street, just across the famous Pulteney Bridge on the other side of the River Avon. Lucky guests staying at our Argyle Retreat, Pulteney Bridge View and Argyle Riverview apartments will all be practically next door!

  • Brasserie Blanc

The first thing you’ll notice when stepping inside Brasserie Blanc are the elegant, classic interiors – all set within a stunning Regency building. You couldn’t be in a better place if you love French cuisine, as this is celebrated chef Raymond Blanc’s brasserie with dishes inspired by classic family recipes and Blanc’s travels throughout the world.

The seasonally changing menu features classic French dishes made with the very best produce. The summer menu features escargot, house steak tartare, moules marinieres, spiced duck leg confit, boeuf bourguignon and many more tempting choices. On the dessert menu, you’ll be severely tempted by the pistachio souffle and summer berry pavlova. The restaurant also has an exceptional wine cellar, and a wonderful choice of refreshing cocktails.

You’ll find Brasserie Blanc on the ground floor of the Francis Hotel on Queen Square, just around the corner from our charming Queen’s View apartment.

  • Bistrot Pierre

Bistrot Pierre is rated as one of the best French restaurants in Bath for very good reason. Diners love the décor and the ambience, which has the perfect balance of ‘buzz’ and intimacy.

The menu features cassolette de moules, crottin de chèvre, poulet de Normandie and the classic crème brûlée, and there are also great value ‘Prix Fixe’ set menus available for both lunch and dinner. On the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, there’s the chance to enjoy a six-course feast as part of Bistrot Pierre’s special gastronomic evenings. What’s more, Bistrot Pierre even does breakfast, so you can pop in for a French-style petit déjeuner during your stay too.
Bistrot Pierre is on George Street, in Princes Buildings, close to our spacious apartment Haystack, which is perfect for larger groups.
