Beat the Jan blues

Beat the January Blues in Bath

9 January 2019

January is usually a very quiet month for all of us, but cold temperatures and the post-Christmas comedown doesn’t have to give you the January blues! There are lots of fun, fabulous and energetic things to do in Bath in January, so start your planning…

  1. Take part in the Bath Skyline Night Race 10K

If your New Year’s Resolution is to get fit, this is the perfect way to start. Sign yourself up for the Bath Skyline Night Race, a 10km dash across one of the most scenic walking, cycling and running routes in the city. And it all happens at night! On 12th January, waves of around 125 runners will set off, as the route can be quite narrow in places. It all sounds super exciting, what an exhilarating way to beat the January blues!

  1. Catch a show at The Theatre Royal

January is the perfect time to hit the theatre, where you can escape the cold and lose yourself in a fabulous production for a few hours. There are lots of productions on at the magnificent Theatre Royal Bath in January, including:

  • The Scarlett Pimpernel – running until 13th January
  • Peter Pan, a traditional family pantomime – running until 13th January
  • Snow Mouse (for ages 6 months to 4 years) – running until 20th January
  • Crimes on the Nile – 8th to 26th January
  • Rain Man (starring Paul Nicholls and Chris Fountain) – 15th to 19th January.
  1. Pamper yourself at the Thermae Bath Spa

What better way to spend a freezing cold January in Bath than immersing yourself in the natural hot spring water at the luxurious Thermae Bath Spa? They have some wonderful facilities including a steam room, sauna and naturally heated rooftop pool. Get yourself a relaxing massage or a beauty treatment, or simply go for a dip. Keep an eye on their website though before visiting, as there are planned maintenance closures at certain points during January.

  1. Take afternoon tea

Having afternoon tea and spending a lovely lazy few hours with a friend or loved one is the perfect way to enjoy Bath in January. Take your pick of cosy venues, from Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House (where you can try the original and famous Sally Lunn Bun) to The Pump Room.

  1. Visit Bath Abbey

This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city, but it can be busy during peak tourist months. Bath in January is much quieter, so you can explore the Abbey and spend as long as you like gazing up at its incredible architecture.
