Places to exercise while staying in Bath

11 June 2018

Bath has a reputation for sporting excellence, being the home of Bath Rugby as well as many sporting stars including Olympic gold medallist Amy Williams. The University of Bath was also named the UK’s top sports university by The Times, so it’s very much the place to visit if you’re of a sporty persuasion.

But what about those who simply want to get active in the city? Thanks to its culture of sport and fitness, there are plenty of fabulous open-air places to exercise in Bath.

From running and cycling to fitness classes and bootcamps in Bath, here’s where to get your adrenaline pumping and enjoy the active life:

  • The Two Tunnels Greenway. The longest cycling tunnel in the UK, the Two Tunnel path is a relatively flat route for walking and cycling which maps a four-mile stretch of disused railway line. This route gives you a great view of the city before you disappear into the tunnel, emerging into a beautiful wooded valley as it heads towards Lyncombe Vale and Combe Down before joining the National Cycle Network.
  • Bristol and Bath Path. For a bigger challenge, head over to Bristol for the day by taking the Bristol to Bath Railway Path – and get some fresh air and exercise at the same time. This tranquil cycling, walking and running path also runs along a disused railway line. It covers a distance of 13 miles, connecting the two cities via access at Bath Spa and Bristol Temple Meads railways stations.
  • Bike Bath 2018. If you love your cycling, make sure to sign up for Bike Bath 2018 on Sunday 1st July. It’s a day of marked rides of 25, 50 and 80 miles across Bath centre and the countryside beyond.
  • Bootcamps in Alice Park. A bootcamp is a great way to revitalise your fitness regime, and what better place to do it than in one of the city’s beautiful parks? Alice Park is one of the best places to exercise in Bath, as it’s more peaceful and tucked-away than other city centre parks. Join Get With The Programme for outdoor fitness bootcamps involving kettlebells, HIIT (high intensity interval training), boxing and lots more.
  • Running in Royal Victoria Park. If you like to run and you also want to see the sights, try this running route. Start at Milsom Street and head towards the Assembly Rooms, Circus and Royal Crescent before looping into the beautiful green expanses of space in Royal Victoria Park. A short but incredibly pleasant way to start your day.
  • Bath Skyline Parkrun. Every Saturday at 9am, you can join in the Bath Skyline Parkrun event – a 5km dash starting from Free Fields on North Road and Claverton Down Road. It’s a timed event where you run against the clock, but mainly just for your own enjoyment and to drink in the stunning scenery.

Remember, you’ll need somewhere super comfortable to rest your aching bones if you’re tackling an outdoor challenge in Bath on the weekend. Take a look at our many sumptuous self-catering Bath apartments spread across the city centre.
