Property Details:
An introduction and historyVisiting this bustling merchants house in the heart of Georgian Bath, Jane Austen might have enjoyed fine tea, good company and the latest news. This atmospheric town house built 280 years ago is full of old world charm. Arranged over 4 floors and full of lovely antiques, handsome fireplaces, charming prints and pretty linens, it paints a wonderful picture of life enjoyed by wealthy regency businessmen of the city. Period furniture has been elegantly blended with modern appliances to make a very comfortable city residence and the central location makes for a very relaxing stay.
Location
Old King Street is a small street around the corner from Bath`s central shopping area. You are surrounded by a wonderful choice of shops, great historic sites and entertainment. Next door is the Hall & woodhouse restaurant
The Ground Floor
A paneled hallway leads to a double reception room with a gas effect fire and plenty of seating. There are double doors and a double sofa bed enabling part of the room to be made private for additional guests.
The Lower Ground Floor
On a half landing leading down is a bathroom tiled in limestone, with bath (with shower over), hand basin and wc. Here too is a door leading out to a small planted courtyard with a pretty wrought iron table and four chairs.
Continue down to a lovely traditional style fitted kitchen with glossy marble worktops, rustic limestone floors and a delightful period fireplace. There is a an electric hob and oven, a dishwasher, microwave and fridge. In keeping with the period style, you`ll find cupboards full of pretty china and polished cut glass and sparkling cutlery.
A separate utility neatly housed under the stairs, has a washing machine and separate dryer.
There is a handsome dining room with another fireplace, a lovely arts and crafts dresser and a dining table that seats 8.
The First Floor
On the way up situated on a half-landing is a cloakroom. This overlooks the courtyard and has a hand basin and wc. Continue up to another elegant living room with a working gas fire for cosy evenings. There is a concealed TV, DVD and Sky. On this floor is the first of the sumptuous double bedrooms. This one is in a floral style, with a double brass bed, pretty fireplace and antique wardrobe.
The Second Floor
Here is the master bedroom, in a black and gold chinoiserie style with a king size bed, plenty of storage and an ensuite. This has a shower, hand basin and wc. Next door is the third double room decorated in county style, with a double bed and plenty of storage.
Places of Interest
All the major historic sites are close-by; The Roman Baths, Bath Abbey, The Royal Crescent, as well as many museums and galleries, There are plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to enjoy as well as the Theatre Royal, the Little Cinema, the Thermae Spa, and the recently opened Komedia Comedy Club. Visually, the city is stunning, built mostly using honey-coloured Bath stone. It is still very much as Jane Austen knew it and portrayed in two of her novels. Handily, the Jane Austen Centre is around the corner and you can find out more about the author and the Jane Austen festival held annually in September.
Parking
A parking permit is provided with this property allowing 1 car to park in the spaces opposite the house (space permitting) or on any of the neighbouring streets. Charlotte St long term car park is only a 2 minute walk away for additional cars. However, with its fabulous city center location, you certainly don`t need a car and the Bath Spa train and bus stations are only a 5 minute walk away.
